See if this video gives you some ideas. Remember to use as much space on the walls up high, like using inexpensive hooks for bicycles, bags to keep outdoor games & toys in, etc.

like items with like items as a starting point. Put a sign on the wall i.e. Tools. All tools go into box below. Lawn care items next....fertilizer hoses sprinklers rakes seeders..all grouped in one area. Cleaning products...yup in a box. Fishing rods bait boxes...in the sporting goods section. Work bench? Goes with the tools.

When items are sorted..think...when was the last time I used...and consider if it's frequently or been a year. There are tool lending libraries pay a deposit use the tool , return it and get deposit back. Now go vertical with storage...you don't want stacks of boxes to shift later so 1 box or 2 per shelf.

The long handeled tools? I have them in a garbage can. 30 gal. My town changes garbage services just about once a year. I have extra cans. Use what's on hand.

Buy shelves that are made for the garage. They usually have 4-5 shelves that are made of metal, and the brackets are metal, very sturdy. You have to assemble it yourself, it's easy. By a few, and put them against the walls in your garage. Homedepot or Lowe's has this item, but I don't know how much they cost. Call them and ask. These can hold a lot of weight.

Free-standing metal shelves cost from $30-$150 or more, but you can build 2x4 frames and put plywood shelves on them for much less. They aren't hard for a newbie to do and can help in getting stuff up off the floor.

If you could Hook it on the walls - do it! If you can put it in the rafters - do it! If it needs to be on a shelf or in a drawer - look out for second hand stuff left at side of road or Charity/Thrift Shop.......
