Cayenne Pepper works in my bird feeders. Squirrels won't come anywhere near them.

I did put a mesh screen under the mulch, but they dug it up, although they didn't get to the new bulbs.(yet)
make a small cage or box-like structure out of smallish chicken wire., then plant this containing the bulbs! The plants can still shoot through. p.s. squirrels dont like daffodil bulbs, so you could use them
instead, if you like.
