Hi Betty. You can make a paste with baking soda and vinegar. Scrub it on and let it sit for about 10 minutes. Then wipe with a damp cloth. You may need to repeat on the hard areas. Make sure you don't get any in between the glass on the door. I also take the racks and lay them on grass. I spray them with vinegar and let them sit outside on the lawn over night. The next day I wipe clean.

Commercial oven cleaner, from the grocery store. Spray on the night before. Wipe out in the morning. Easy Off Brand. Just be sure to put down plenty of news paper, with plastic underneath. It will take off the floor finish, if it gets on the surface. Wear plastic gloves and old clothing.

I used blue Dawn, just a squirt, and poured a small amount of hot water over it for the baked on stuff on the bottom. A few minutes later it slid right off with a scraper. For the top and sides, set a bowl of ammonia on the rack and leave it for several hours, then wipe with a damp rag. I also clean burned on food from pans with the Dawn and hot water for quick cleaning.

Use the self-cleaning method, if you feel it uses too much gas or electric, you can clean it your self, but ruin the oven. You can steam clean your oven by putting a Pyrex bowl with water and set the oven at 350, run it about 1 hour. The steam will loosen the grease and grime, and you wipe it with a wet rag.

Will cleaning with water as you describe also ruin the oven?
