Free kitchen table

I just scored a free table. the legs are wood and the top is Formica or something. I want to redo it but I have no idea how to make the top look like real wood

You may be able to pull the Formica off of the wood it is glued to. (Which is the base) Then attach a thin piece of decorative wood on top. Then stain the wood.
flip the table over and unscrew the top but save for a pattern. Use 1 sheet of 3/4 inch 4x8 birch plywood (cabinet grade) and place old table top on it; draw a line around top and remove top. Cut out new top outside drawn line. Stain new top and apply polyurethane; 3-4 coats should do it. Attach new top to table base and attach moulding all around to cover edges. New top!
