Will a lighter gel stain still cover a dark wood?

I have an espresso television console that needs refinishing, but I'd like to stain it a medium brown color (or lighter). I plan to use a gel stain, but will it work in this case?

You will probably have to sand it down as the darker espresso will always dominate. You can't make it lighter (unless you paint/prime it first).
