Most people use way too much shampoo. In my last house there was so much soap in the nap of the carpet I just used clear rinse water every time I cleaned it. A touch of white vinegar would help if the scent for a little while does not bother you. I've used a few different things, including a little Dawn dish detergent, and always err on the light side. You can always go back and clean it again if you don't like the result.

Better to err on the light side... I like the BISSELL line of products they don't leave it stiff.

True which is why steam cleaning is the best route to take when it comes to cleaning carpeting.

We owned a floor covering business for many years. The main thing to know is never wet the carpet! No matter what you do, you can never get all the moisture out and it does a number on the fibers. There are dry products that you can sprinkle on and vacuum up that work on deep down dirt. Also, there is a company called ChemDry that is wonderful. I do not have carpet in my home, but I have used ChemDry for the carpets in my jewelry store for 20 years. Look online to see if there is one in your area.

  • I use vinegar even when professionally steam cleaned.
