just emptied egg shells may help to repel the snakes
Snakes are very beneficial in the garden, they keep the population of pests that will ruin your garden down. I know its startling to come across one, but they are seriously more scared of you than you are of them, and they do so much good! That being said, I really don't know if there is a way to deter them that is safe for them and your garden. Good luck!
I've always heard moth balls were good to repel snakes. Some people swear by it and some: not so much. You would have to replace them over time with rain and dew as they will dissolve. PS: Mothballs can harm pets and humans if ingested.
Here is a site to read about snake repllents.

I agree with Diane. Nature has a balance. If you remove the snakes, whatever they are eating will multiply. I used to live in the country, and snakes would keep the mice population down in my barn.
