Just planted frost resistant gardenias. Do I fertilize now or spring?

i live in S.C. These were planted inlate September. And when I fertilize can I use spikes for evergreens ?

    Newly planted perennials,tropicals,trees and shrubs should never be fertilized until after one year of established growth

    You can fertilize in mid to late spring when new growth is apparent. I have lots of gardenias and I've always fertilized in the spring, regardless of when I planted. They have always done great.
