I looked into doing my own annual check too but found there was more stuff to check than just a checklist. Nothing beats the experience of a seasoned HVAC technician so I pay the 100 bucks or so each year to have someone come out and check over the heat pump system to maintain my 10 year warranty. Your part is changing the air filter every 30 to 90 days, depending on the filter you buy. You could also flush out the condensate drain line occasionally by just dumping a quart of water in it. They tend to get sludged up.

  • First, change or wash your filter every month. If you do not have the owners manual, check the manufacturers website for tips for your model. Have a service check up at least once a year. Some people do twice a year, spring , before a/c season starts and again in fall.
