How to polish granite and basalt boulders?

Our new home is amply blessed with large and small granite and basalt boulders anywhere from 6" across to 2.5' across. All rather beyond a rock tumbler to handle. (I have a cement mixer, so I can clean them up a bit if needed.) I am trying to find the grinders and disks used to polish certain features up, along with helpful instructions. Thanks in advance from the DIY community! (and, no, hand sanding is NOT an option!)

There are diamond grinding attachments available for angle grinders and I like the idea of using the cement mixer to knock off some of the corners. I would tend to think the rocks will hold up longer than the mixer though. One thing that you should keep in mind is that the grinding dust is deadly. Talked with a stone carver in Vermont and he and his fellow carvers do not do granite because it will severely shorten lifespan. People who do this literally suffocate to death over time. Whatever you try, get yourself an expensive face mask and do whatever you need to keep your work wet. Some of the projects I read about make me envious that I am not involved but this is not one of them.

Thanks! I understand that ANY airborne particulate is dangerous, that is why I use a respirator when sanding and cutting wood! Concrete dust and the like contain silica, which is under great scrutiny in terms of worker safety. Thanks for the tip! and chucking one-man stone into a cement mixer will not make for good neighbors. angry neighbors, yes, good neighbors, no. R
