if you are new to it, get a hefty cotton yarn and practice making pot holders. It's a small project...but you will learn to keep the tension even and how to finish off a project
Also, if you run across a stitch that you don't know how to do, go to youtube.com and search for it.
buy a BOOK or MAGAZINE on the subject so you can keep referring to it.
