Will lime (just before a rain) work in the yard to kill fleas?

We have two small dogs that keep getting fleas from our yard. My sister said said lime spread over the yard (1/2 acre) will kill fleas. She also said to do it just before a rain so the dogs don't step on it. Any thoughts?

Hi Jean. You could use Diatomaceous Earth. This is a natural product made from crushed shells and coral. It cuts any insect with a exoskeleton causing them to dehydrate and then die. It is safe for pets. I use it for ants and ticks. I have never used lime before.
  • Try spraying the perimeter of your propety with vinegar. I have done this forever and it does help. Make sure you spray on the ground and protect any plants as vinegar will kill them. Do not spray on painted or stained surfaces either. I spray the perimeter and base of my house once a month.

Lime will not get rid of fleas,it is a soil neutralizer.Apply food grade diatomaceous earth

Another thing to do is to line any flower beds that are right up to your house with cedar chips. You can use them as mulch. You can buy them in a big package at places like Petsmart or Petco or even Walmart. Cedar won't kill fleas, but it repels them. I also used to make cedar stuffed "cushions" for in between the window and the screen when we lived in an apartment building where the strays always had fleas. The other ideas suggested are good for elimination, but just in case some manage to get through that, fleas won't hang with the cedar.

Other sites recommend to use hydrated lime on your yard. First mow close to the ground. Then rake and remove anything the buggers can hide in and under. Spread the lime as package directions recommend. I put extra in shady areas. Then water your lawn. They say an inch of water a week until you can't see the powder, Then repeat. Diatomaceous earth works when dry. I have rubbed it on my pets, but not the one who sleeps with me.
