Do you mean "rusty" old... there are kits that will give shiny metal an aged rusty look..(spray with one product, wait, and spray with 2nd step...etc)
You could also try "dry brushing" with several shades of brown/rust paints
or you could (in small sections) spray with brown/rust paints and wipe down until you get the look you want. Most methods will require a matte sealer after to preserve the look

I agree with the vinegar treatment. I soaked a towel in vinegar, applied it to my vase & let it "mellow". I did it in sections.......worked like a charm. Not every section turned out exactly the same, but my new tin vase looks like an aged galvanized pail.
I'm sure it smells pretty bad! Just be careful!
