I have a 4 bedroom home with workshop/extra rooms with bathroom. It needs lots of maintenance, outside courtyard needs painting, needs new carpets in bedrooms, a new kitchen, painting, etc. What do I need to do first on a small budget?

Paint, paint, paint! That's the most economical way to get a big impact.

I watch a lot of home improvement shows and read about remodeling. The kitchen is a definite room to focus on. For your painting projects I would contact the local high school to see if they have responsible students who need community credits. As long as they're reliable. For carpet, see if someone has remnants or of you have hardwoods under your carpet, spruce them up. They don't have to be perfect. I hope this helps.

Bathroom, kitchen, and front curb appeal are the most important upgrades. Also, declutter, declutter, declutter. Store everything personal like family photos, toys, etc. Absolute minimum should be left in the house to show the use of each room. Store extra furniture, take the leaves out of the dining table, one bed and one dresser in bedrooms, nothing in garage, then make the front look very appealing including new paint on door/windowsills, new mulch on flower beds, everything trimmed. etc.

Kitchen and baths sell a home, but no one wants to inherit your unmaintained areas either so fix what needs fixing. You want it to look immaculately clean and well maintained.

I agree with the above comments. You will get the biggest bang for your buck with paint. Make sure to use very neutral colors. Clean your carpeting. Or, if it's in bad shape, replace it. The kitchen and bathrooms need to be squeaky clean. I hope these ideas help you.

I would do a fresh paint job all over and spend most of money on the kitchen and baths
