Saving photos that have been through a fire.

My parents home recently burned and we were able to get the photo albums out. They were in a stand that didn't burn... Some of the albums were scorched, but the ones stacked underneath were not. However, they were all wet and have to be taken apart and allow the photos to dry. (Long process) I am going to put them all back in new albums for them as they dry. But....my problem... the photos smell of fire and when they get their new home, I don't want them to have any reminders of the fire. Is there anyway to get the smoke smell off the photos... Anyone? I appreciate any advise I can get!

There are professional companies that perform this type of work. Your insurance company should be able to provide you with names of those that they would recommend and most likely are covered by your insurance. This type of restoration is very tricky and should not be attempted with any home remedy solution. If you are on a financial lower budget you could scan them all and reprint them on photo paper. Once you have them all scanned they are now all digital and can be retouched if necessary to remove water damage before printing them.

So sorry to hear of your parents' trouble. Both suggestions above are very good. If you decide to scan some damaged photos, try a few and see if it's something you can do yourself. I would think it would be very time-consuming. Good luck.

All great suggestions. I would just add that scanning old family photos is always a good idea for any of us. Not only should disaster strike, but also to display/alter while preserving the original AND a great way to share with loved ones! I'm the thrilled recipient of many treasured family photos this way, and happily share mine as well. I wish your folks well after their trauma. I bet your sweet gesture will mean the world to them! Stuff is stuff, but memories truly are priceless.
