A while ago I made a display board for my front porch out of a shipping pallet and some glass tiles. I knew I wanted to put banners of some sort in it so I finally figured out exactly what I wanted. I saw one banner for sale for $15 and thought; I can make that, plus more for a lot less.

So I decided on a fabric drop cloth. Not only is a great surface to work with, I was able to make 9 banners out of one drop cloth. That's plenty for every season and holiday I want to display.

So I have not finished all of my banners yet, but Halloween is done and on display. So happy with the easy of the project and the cost.

Don't worry if you aren't an artist, you can download fonts to help you make stencils if you need them.
Here is the drop cloth in it's full size. My dog wanted to play in it and likes to be in every picture we take....

this drop cloth was 6'x9'
I don't sew, we'll get that out of the way....The project may be faster if you sew, I'm not sure. This part did take me about 2 hours, just to make the banners.

first I measured the space I had to display the banner. I then cut pieces of the cloth, giving myself an additional 1/4 in for the hem.

I used fusing tape and simply folded the fabric over and ironed it to make my hem.

Here is one of the finished banners after doing the hem. The tape makes a really nice edge and I haven't had any issues with it coming undone.
Here is the paint I used. Since my banner will not be in the elements, I was not worried about getting water proof paint. Now it would be a nice touch if a little water does get on it and a get a bit of bleeding, since it is a halloween banner. You can get these paints just about anywhere. I got these at Walmart for $1.
So here it is in the display board. I just used little clothespins to attach it. I have chickenwire behind the banner. Now I can start working on the other upcoming holidays. May put lights into the Christmas banner.

We want to help you DIY, so some of the materials in this post are linked to sellers. Just so you know, Hometalk may collect a small share of sales from the links on this page.

I finally got the burlap banner done and up. I wasn't super careful with my edges so I'm not perfectly straight on the edges but I still like the look.

do you have a picture of the display board without the banner? I really would like to see the "base" of your banner. It looks wonderful!

Great Idea. It looks like you have the banner on something with tiles. They are very pretty. Can you tell us how you made it and where you got them. Thanks.

Actually, the acrylic paint on fabric is waterproof. I have used it in a pinch on tee shirts. On wearables though, it doesn't dry soft, but on a banner it doesn't matter. Great piece!
