What is the best way to repaint an orange metal filing cabinet?

This filing cabinet is really good quality but it's a peachy/orange color! I would like to repaint it, but am not sure if it is best to strip the orange paint first (if so, what's the best way), or if it is ok to just paint right over the orange paint? In the photo the top looks a bit more yellow than the drawers, but that's just due to glare).

  • Just clean it with TSP, get a primer and paint formulated for metal and paint away.

spray paint with Rustoleum for metal. Wipe down with fine grit sandpaper first to make it smooth then wipe with tack cloth or rinse with water (let dry). Then paint a few thin coats.

Sand with 120 grit sand paper to give it a "tooth" to hold the paint, wipe down with a damp rag and then use a "tack" cloth to remove all sanding residue. Use a good quality metal primer, and then paint with your choice of finish.

Spray paint (Rustoleum is good) in several light coats

if you roll on the paint use one of the 4 inch. rag like roller covers for "smooth finishes"

    have fun!

Thanks for the idea. It would be easier than painting for a quick update!
