Have you noticed the new trend in kitchen cabinets? Blue base cabinets paired with white upper cabinets looks fresh and clean. But don't call a contractor. DIY this popular trend for thousands less than a new kitchen would cost.
This kitchen was ready for a re-do.
Like most older kitchens, it had a cabinet and stove hood installed a bit below the ceiling. By raising this cabinet up, we made room for the microwave, and got it off the counter.
A cabinet support was peeling, so it was definitely time to paint. Carefully removing the peeling veneer and priming the bracket was all it took.
This looks like a big deal, but really isn't. Just move the upper cabinet so it is flush with the ceiling, and now there is plenty of room for a shiny new microwave.

There have been a few questions about why the microwave is wider than the cabinet. It's not wider, but it is deeper than the cabinet, and that's normal. Range hoods are also deeper than cabinets. The angle of the picture might make you wonder, but the left edge of the cabinet and microwave are flush with each other.

To answer THE MOST ASKED question about this project, all new hanging microwaves have a fan underneath. You can choose to vent it outside, or just use it to recirculate inside without venting. Either way, it's a big space saver on the counter.

A simple new box cabinet to the right of the microwave fills in the gap. Once that move was done, everything was painted.
Prime the cabinets and the inside of the doors. I usually recommend taking the doors off hinges, but in this case, we decided to leave them on the cabinet boxes. It saved us so much time. Look away from the shocking pink dropcloth. The bottom cabinet color is Sherwin Williams Needlepoint Navy SW0032. The top cabinets are Sherwin Williams Extra White SW7006.
All the cabinets got hardware, for the first time ever. This is actually stock hardware from Home Depot, but it looks more expensive.
Even that peeling bracket looks so much better painted a clean white. The new refrigerator doesn't hurt, either. You might note here that the counter and backsplash look a lot better, too. These aren't new, but they are improved. Hop over to the HeartWork Organizing blog to learn insider tricks to make any kitchen bright and fresh like this one. Ready for the reveal?
Same cabinets, but trendy and colorful with blue base cabinets and white upper cabinets. And the best part? Almost no downtime. Instead of spending thousands for new cabinets, a couple of hundred dollars in paint can be the starting point to a whole new look.

There was more to this entire kitchen re-do, but even with other changes that you probably have noticed, this whole transformation took just a couple of days.

Did you add anything to the paint to improve or blend the brush marks.

Do you miss the lighting above the cabinets over the stove in the old kitchen? Did you replace it with other lighting that maybe I missed in the pix of the new kitchen?

Hi Darla. A while back.. you and your mother had a video that shows step by step instructions on how to redo kitchen cabinets done in all white. I lost the video, but now ready to do this to my kitchen for $200- Could you send that video to show my husband. lrthom99654@icloud.com

There are minor fixes and there are major fixes. When you start tearing off tile, you end up with a whole new set of problems. Always think ROI (return on investment) for any home improvement project.

BEAUTIFUL!! My kitchen is a bit dated too, however we rent and can't do the redo. However, since our cabinets don't have knobs either, I'm going to add some pulls (knobs) in something a little more modern. Hope that's enough to make it better. Plus we have some electrical issues so I'm hoping to talk the electrician into replacing the lighting to something newer. Making another move to updating things. I hope it's enough to bring it into this decade or so.
