I found a cigarette smoke stained marble lamp at a Flea Market and cleaned it up (not all, but pretty well) by rubbing it with halved/cut lemons. I applied many applications. There are strong acids used to professionally clean church marble steps, etc., but I do not recommend their use by neophytes, like me.
You can make a past of OcyClean, and apply that. Dribble water on it occasionally, because it dries. Rinse. Repeat until gone.
stay away from vinegar though- it will scratch it up bc of the acid
