I was given an Amaryllis for Easter several years age (we live in Phoenix AZ) and I planted it under our grape vine... it has stayed green and bloomed every year since.
Don't cut the leaves off until they die back. They are feeding the bulb for next year. Once the stubs of the leaves that you cut off dry out, dig the bulb out and store it in a dark, dry place. (we put ours on a shelf in the basement here in n. Illinois) until time to plant for the next season. If the bulb has "babies", you can separate and plant them, too. Just a note: this year, our pretty red/white amaryllis presented us with huge, pure white blooms. It was a surprise but a pleasant one.
I was surprised that my plant bloomed at the base of the plant, Four beautiful pink and white flowers. Is this unusual? Did not produce a tall stem with flowers on the top.
I'd say very unusual. We've never had one do that. I've always wished they would bloom sooner so they weren't so tall. We sometimes have to tie them up so they don't tip the pot over. I can only guess that it had something to do with the amount of light the bulb got as it was sprouting. Or, perhaps the breeders have developed a new variety? Our bulbs are several years old. I do know that amaryllis need a period of darkness, like poinsettias, so, perhaps your's got too much darkness and pushed out the bud before it got enough light to produce the stalk? Where are you located? That might make a difference, too, although we really haven't noticed one between our Illinois house in summer and our Texas place in winter. You've really gotten me curious. I may have to do some research and call our extension office. I'll let you know if I find out anything.
