I would go to Habitat for Humanity Restore, they have lots of recycled cabinets.

You could also so some open shelving for dishes and glassware, they make stainless steel ones for kitchen.

If you can't sand them smooth, use paint stripper to remove the paint and then sand. As long as the cabinet is in good working order, its fixable with elbow grease.

you can use chalk paint. no need to sand or prime the cabinets.

Tammy, You can go on pinterest to see how to make your own chalk paint or buy already made. google on line to find a store near you. Walmart carries chalk paint but you want a bigger size than they carry. you just brush it on. it drys pretty fast. they also have a waxy overcoat you can buy. Amazon, Target, Tru-Value. Annie Sloan chalk paint is the most expensive. chalk paint is a little pricey. Or for another idea, chalkboard paint-diff than chalk paint, the kind you write on-has a bunch of diff colors. I found chalk paint powder on a blog. go to craftaholics anonymous & she tells you everything you need to know. she painted her kitchen cabinets with it. she gives you instructions & pictures. Good Luck to you! I'm 68 & looking for an inexpensive way to redo mine too. I found this while checking things out for you. if you're not on Pinterest, you should be! Let me know how your turn out. I think I'm going to use the powder mix.
