Finding an electrical junction box

We have an outlet in our living room that is not "live." A previous remodel in the basement apparently covered up (with beadboard paneling) the junction box in the ceiling! How do we locate the junction box and try to get the outlet live and usable?

There are 'detectors' that could finish the job. They are battery operated, slid along a wall, and will detect, studs, wiring, etc. I have two different types, one for studs one for metal. Work like a charm
