This link will give you ideas. If you choose to go with no carpeting, you can paint your steps and use runners, glued down of course. The second link gives you some more things to think about. Hope that helps.

You might need new carpet. Get a medium dark color with a very tight weave.
You can paint them and then use stair step carpet pieces where people walk, then replacing them will be easier then a new runner or full carpet next time the become soiled or warn
If you remove the carpeting, and bring them up to a cheap wood finish, you can paint them decoratively, and include a bit of sand in the paint for the tread part. Just choose a quality paint, like PPG/Porter Paints Advantage 900 in semi-gloss.
