Traditional to Modern - Farmhouse Glam Foyer Makeover

4 Materials
2 Weeks

My client, Christin wanted to update her entry from an existing, traditional design to a more modern look with a touch of farmhouse flair. We went over ideas and colors and here is the result!
Here is the entry before. The console cabinet and mirror were black and the walls a dark taupe.
Here is another pic of the wall color. Nothing wrong with it at all, except it is a little dated and dark.
As with any older home, surprises await! Christin discovered that the previous owner had painted over wallpaper. This created a huge amount of work and prep before the walls could be painted. She hired professional painters for the task.
Here is a pic of a bench that Christin also had in her foyer. It was a creamy yellow finish and peeling in places. This also received a much needed makeover!
Here is the foyer now! We decided on gray for the cabinet and mirror and light distressing to give farmhouse flair. We went with Benjamin Moore on the walls. For all paint colors, plus links to light fixtures, please click on over to the blog post in the link below.
The whitewash over the gray adds a softer finish on the cabinet. The process of adding a whitewash is here: Whitewash Over Wax Tutorial
The color is perfect against the newly painted walls.
You can see the newly finished bench in the corner. Christin is having four photos of her children matted and framed in black to add on the wall space above the bench.
Milk paint and glaze were used to give it a charcoal gray finish. I have a video tutorial on the bench process here: GF Topcoat and Glaze Tutorial
Christin had her door repainted in black.. It remains open for most of the day and looks sharp against the gray and white in the foyer, plus it ties in nicely with her dining room.
We also chose a new light fixture for the foyer. It brings in the black and has a touch of farmhouse charm.
Here you can see how the foyer leads into her dining room. Her dining room was previously finished and we worked with its color and design to incorporate the style into the foyer. The colors all flow from space to space.
The dark color in the dining room really gives it that glam - plus that amazing chandelier! I think you can see why I coined the term "Farmhouse Glam" for her home!
The dark walls allow the artwork and mirrored console cabinet to pop.
We are all done and on to her family room next! I just finished refinishing her coffee table for the new space!
