How can I repair my fogged dual-glazed window?

To avoid expense of whole window or IGU replacement which can easily exceed $1000 each, what can I as a homeowner do to clean the glass inside a dual-pane insulated glazed unit (IGU) and reseal to avoid future moisture penetration? My particular windows are large 48" x 48" with aluminum frames, mid-1980s vintage.
The seal has been broken on your windows. Since they have metal frames, the are not heat efficient. The best thing is to replace them. New windows will conserve the heat. You will save the cost of replacement in the long run.
Get bids on replacement windows. Sometimes your big box stores and name brand windows are a lot more expensive than others. Check around. I replaced all my windows last year and the bids ranged over a thousand dollars difference - with the same warranties.

I had them installed. After watching the installer, I'm not sure I'd install them myself. I ended up getting a referral from a neighbor. It was a small window company and was much cheaper than Home Depot. These vinyl windows are not "name brand" but have the same warranty. They are tilt windows so I can clean them from the inside. I'd go to a place like Angie's List to get names of local companies, then get bids. Windows can be configured as sliders or up/down, with or without the look of smaller panes - in other words, many ways which can be less or more expensive. Good luck.
we had that problem with pella windows and the service man showed us a small vent that was blocked by spiderwebs. Kept those clear with toothpicks and had 10+ years fog-free
I have a patio door that is building moisture on one side. Should I replace it and where can I get the best price for one.

have you thought about etching them with liquid or spray glass etching to mask the look
You might also be able to get rebates from your power company for installing more efficient windows. So that might help with costs. Of course you could always do what my neighbor did....break the outside pane....super easy to clean then! [it was the classic ball-hits window]
