I don't have good luck with mail ordering plants either, but one year I got an ornamental tree to live and it is my thrill to see it still growing. BUT I planted 20 some trees that year.
Probably because they are genetically modified they will not come back. I found this out when I tried to harvest seeds from my tomato plants that were not organic. They sprouted the next spring then died. Now I buy an organic tomato from Whole Foods and save the seeds and grow the next year. Then I save some seeds each year from my own Organic heirloom tomatos
Are these annuals? Thy naturally die off in the winter. Please tell us what type of plants they are, where you are planting them (sun, under trees etc.)and your location or planting zone.

Jackson & Perkins is about the only place I get quality plants! Wayside is good too.
