What is the wall made of, drywall, plaster?

This is a relatively easy repair. Does not matter if it's plaster or drywall. Scrape away anything loose. Smear joint compound over the area, tucking it into the crack. Lay joint paper tape or fiberglass over the crack and embed it in the compound you just put on. Smear it down flat. Let it dry for a day and add another layer of the compound spreading out wider. Do the same a third time and you should be ready to sand and paint. There is an art to this and after a lot of years of doing this kind of repair I am still not good at it. You should not expect your first time to be perfect either. You can always sand it back down or scrape away damage and try again.

I think before it is sealed in you need to make sure you don't have mold growing inside your wall.

My 2cents would be to also use a paint like kilz to inhibit mold and a shellac based primer before painting so no stains come through
