What's the best way to attach a cedar mantel to a rock fireplace ledge

Casey MillerLinda Sikut

The rocks are large round rocks that leave an uneven surface. The ledge that it will sit on is half the depth of the mantel. Not knowing what's behind the rock makes us afraid to drill into it. How do we level the surface and attach it securely?

Here's an article that shows how one couple did it, but they knew what was behind the rock. Is there a place that is somewhat hidden where you could drill a small hold to figure out what's behind there? You could always patch it up later. Or wait a while, someone else might know what would always be behind a rock wall - or at least should be. :)

    Good luck with your project.

Can you send a pic of the wall and the mantle? It would help a lot. I don't know if this venue allows it but if you can, it would be helpful. I've been a contractor for many years and know how to attach things to other things, but in this case I would like to see what I'm working with. Thanks,
