Here's an article that shows how one couple did it, but they knew what was behind the rock. Is there a place that is somewhat hidden where you could drill a small hold to figure out what's behind there? You could always patch it up later. Or wait a while, someone else might know what would always be behind a rock wall - or at least should be. :)

Can you send a pic of the wall and the mantle? It would help a lot. I don't know if this venue allows it but if you can, it would be helpful. I've been a contractor for many years and know how to attach things to other things, but in this case I would like to see what I'm working with. Thanks,
