    Don't cut crepe myrtles.

    DON'T CUT crepe myrtles! You will weaken the tree! Let them grow naturally and only remove dead wood. Amputation is sad, besides being unsightly. I am a Master Gardner and we have to persistently tell people NOT to do this.

    They are right! Don't cut them! These two are in my neighbor's yard and serve to shade our houses part of the time. In the second photo you can see a third one just peeking over the top of the house, it's way in the back corner. They have never been pruned.
    But if you do prune, don't do it until late winter after frost threat is past. They will come back by summer. Don't commit "Crepe Murder" as shown in this link. http://www.southernliving.com/garden/grumpy-gardener/what-concerns-p
