Managing rust on metal

I have plant stands that I have to sand down almost yearly to eliminate the rust developing from under the paint. I always prime and then paint the objects with Rustoleum exterior paint but I am not able to keep the rust at bay. Any suggestions?

have you tried using a primer after you get the rust off and then painting them? I know Rustoleum has paints with a primer in them already. I have used this on metal outdoor furniture and it hasn't rusted again.

If you are continually have problems with the item rusting.... remove the rust with a produce like Naval Jelly... rinse and dry well. Then use a primer for metal like Rustoleum's "Rusty Metal Primer"... there is a brush on and (I think) a spray on. This does a better job sealing the metal before paint. Use a good outdoor sealer after you paint to complete the process.

Are you using exterior paint for metal?

Seems unusual to me too. Are you using spray damp-proof red primer and spray top coat? And you are cleaning down to bare metal everywhere there is a crack in the paint? If the surface is clean and the new paint is adhering there is something more here that we're not seeing. I would expect as much as ten years out of a well finished metal plant stand outdoors.

I think so. It's Rustoleum that I thought would work on metal. I will definitely make sure it is. Thanks.

There are clear paints/sealers that are made for use outdoors. Some are brushed on and some come in sprays.... but the container will say that it is for indoor or outdoor use or both.. Some paints are "permeable" meaning that they breath or let water pass thru and an indoor only paint/sealer will not hold up well outdoors.

Try a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser....it got a long-standing rust spot off of our light carpet.

I am not aware of a damp-proof red primer. Any specific brand you use? I do use two coats of paint. I'm beginning to wonder if it has to do with the paint cracking as it sits outside. Thanks for the info. If there's a brand on that primer I'd really like to know what you use.

Do you have a place to store them over the winter where they are not exposed to the elements?
