How can you bring your outside ferns inside for the winter?

No, not successfully. And also think about the mess when the leaves start to fall. I used to try and save mine. Now, I leave them outside till they get too ugly and compost them. I buy new each year. Lowe's has a fern sale every spring ($10 for hanging basket size, 10").

I would spray them first with a strong stream of water, then after they dry, spray with an insecticidal soap. The hardest thing to do is to water them thoroughly

by soaking in the bath tub. The indoor Chicago heat can be quite drying. They will need to be watered a lot. I usually give up by december and pitch them. I live in SC and it still hard to get them looking good

Trim them back to about 3-5 inches. Take them out of the containers and drown them in a tub of water, removing all the old dirt from the roots. Clean the pots with hot water and baking soda. Let dry (you can use a lawn blower or hair dryer to speed up the drying). Take ferns out of water, drain and re-pot with clean soil. Let ferns dry, then spray with Neem oil. Make sure over the winter they are in a sunny window. No sunny window, invest in grow lights. Good luck!

I buy some Systematic insect killer for house plants...is a powder you sprinkle on the dirt or inside the fern. Then water the stuff in. Do this about two weeks before bring the plant inside....your fern will shed leaves for awhile when brought inside, but with a lot of sun and spraying with water for humidity you will be fine.

Are the ferns planted in the ground? These would be perinnials and they will come back next year.
