Layer the wood heavily with succulent soil,place the succulents in the soil .
Try placing the branch in a vice (like connected to a work bench). Then use a hand chisel to widdle the area out. Be careful not to hurt yourself.

The issue is the wood. Walnut is a very hard, beautiful wood.
A hole saw bit, I just got one of these yesterday to drill a hole through a walnut desktop for a clients new computer cords. It actually was a double wall construction and it went through both like a dream.
