We had nearly an acre of ant hills and tried poison, bait, and everything. They moved their nests and came back stronger than ever. We hated using chemicals on the environment and besides they did not work well! Finally, an old timer told us about cornmeal! It kills them because they cannot digest it. They take it back to the nest and it kills the queen and colony. Sprinkle it on a mound or trail where you see a number of ants. We use Jiffy because it is sweet and they gather it quite quickly. I have used it in my potted plants, new spring colonies moving in, and anywhere in the yard or driveway they have become a problem. One box of Jiffy is good for an average of 5 applications. Reapply if it rains before the nest is gone. Most nests and ants will be gone after 2 or 3 days. I seldom have to make a second application, but put more out if you still see a few ants because the colony may be large and not all the ants ate it. We saved our new plum tree and new crab apple trees with it! It works! It is safe for pets, children and the environment; and the best part is it works!
First you have to find their nest. I found I was having ants, had exterminators spray, but eventually they come back. I had old wood sitting on my deck near the firepit and didn't realize that was a great home for ants. We moved the stack to powerwash and found the nest. They also will make homes in your flower pots on your deck if you have them. If you just kill the ones you see they will keep coming back. I read something about making a sugar/boric acid mixture and putting it near their trail. They will eat and take back to the queen, which within a week or so will kill the nest. Be careful if you have pets so they don't ingest. Not sure if that works. I've tried cornmeal and didn't notice it helping.
Set ant traps all over the kitchen, I guess that's where they are. Don't kill them if you see one, let it go into the trap and come out and take the poison back to the nest. This might take 2-3. days, so be patient. Next, go outside and look for ant hills, around your house. If you find some , pour boiling water or ant and roach spray in the holes.
