Use a spray bottle with warm water. Mist a small section at a time, let it sit and scrape with a drywall/putty knife (wide one). Be careful not to dig too deep and scrape the drywall underneath. you will need to sand it and do some prep work before painting. Once you uncover it you will know. When we removed our popcorn ceiling we covered everything and scraped it. It was not hard, just tedious. Since then we have seen it done with a vacuum attachment on a hose duct taped to the scraper. The shop vac caught nearly all the mess and was much easier clean up. You still need to cover everything with sheets or drop cloths or dust will settle on everything.
This is one for the professionals as it could contain Asbestos....Better to cover it rather than strip!
A lot of work. Can apply sheet rock over ceiling. My husband used young and grove wood panels and covered the ceiling. Then used poly erthane . Everyone loves them and wants him to do their house.
