What can I use to replace a chair rail?

Our dining room table is next to a wall and our chairs are rubbing on the wall. I had a chair rail, but I'm looking for an updated idea.

Chair rails are great as long as they are not everywhere. I hope that they are still in style. Wainscoting is nice if it fits with the style of your home.
You need something for the chairs to hit to stop the rubbing on the wall. Perhaps you can do something under the rail to go with your décor.
If you like a nautical theme, rope may be an option.
