In the dead of night, the witch cauldrons boil – and they’ll need all the right poisons for their hocus pocus fun! Mary Childs of Focal Points created a bewitching DIY with her Witch Potion Bottles project. You will definitely be saying “My little pretties!” with these…
Supplies Glass Bottles of different sizes from any craft or thrift storeTexture EffectsCoffee Bean Glazing Cream ColorPlatinum Metallic PaintEmperor’s Silk Chalk Paint® by Annie SloanCake Decorator Bag and Tip2″ Chip Brush and Small Artist BrushesSmall Spray Bottle with Water
Brush on an appropriate acrylic bonding primer for the glass vials and let dry. You can use a good bonding primer such as Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 for this step. One tip trick is to paint the bottoms, let dry, and then tackle the tops.
Using the 2″ chip brush, pounce and dab the Texture Effects on the surface to create your desired texture. Let dry overnight.
Using a pencil, write the potion names on the bottles. This will help guide you as you write out the names with the cake decorating bag. Use the cake decorating bag filled with Texture Effects and follow the penciled copy to write the raised potion names. Allow to dry overnight.
Next, you can mix 1 part Coffee Bean Glazing Cream Color to 3 Parts Water and brush onto random areas of the surface. Spray the surface with water and let it drip and run, leaving some areas darker and lighter. You can manipulate the depth of color with the brush and the water – have fun with this! When you like your colorwash finish on the bottles, let dry to touch and continue with the next step.
Use another small brush to drip the Emperor’s Red Chalk Paint® onto a few areas of your chosen bottles to simulate blood. It’s helpful to use the labeled potion bottle this would make the most sense on. Allow to dry completely.
Dip a small artist brush into the Platinum Metallic Paint and lightly brush over the raised letters. Let dry. You are now ready to style your Halloween mantle!

I did this but with different materials and on a smaller scale. I used regular craft paint, puff paint for the lettering. I used clean spice cans and plastic bottles. Olive oil glass bottles and tubes of toothpaste from the dollar store to decorate. I gave many of the tubes as door prizes. just squeeze out a small bit use a turkey baster to add black or red food coloring and squish the contents around in the tube paint it use puff paint to name it and wallah! This is a lot of fun in any size and makes great decorations. Have fun and use what you have!!
