We covered everything up then scraped it off. Since then we heard of a man using a shop vac duct taped to the scraper to save all the clean up. It isn't hard, just tedious.
Cover the floor underneath and then use a water sprayer such as one for plants and as it gets moist then scrape. It's going to be a mess but well worth it.
Not hard, just a big mess... so cover with tarps (we have tile floors, so we just let if fall and swept it up, then mopped)
Get a garden sprayer, cheap works good, and fill it with water. And you will need a strong wide scraper... FYI the ones with a bag attached get heavy real fast
Starting with about a 3 foot square.... Spray with water (not dripping) and wait about 10 minutes for the water to soak in... spray again along with your next "section"... use the scraper to scrape off the texture. Continue until done.
Note: most companies do not prime drywall before shooting the popcorn (and you won't know this until you try it) but occasionally one will, and it will make getting the texture harder to get off.
FYI... your neck and arm(s) will be sore the next day... so be prepared with the Tylenol etc.
First off if your house was built before the mid 80's your stucco could contain asbestos. I had mine tested for that and lead before scraping.
Secondly, if oil paint was use over top, it will be very hard to remove. No paint or latex is fine.

After trying different methods, I now only spray with water, let sit a minute, then use a box lid to catch the fall-out from scraping with a plastic drywall knife/taping tool...the wider the better. There is barely any clean up. If you let it fall to the floor, tarps or no tarps, you will have quite a bit of dust. to clean up. Cover your vents, and do not use your furnace or any other fans.
I bought a fancy scraper that holds a bag. It was heavy, cumbersome. left gouges. It wasn't worth the money.
Move the furniture out or to one side of the room and cover with cheap plastic from a roll. Get a lawn pumpup sprayer and fill with water to spray an area 4 x 4. A good wetting of the ceiling will allow you to use 4 to 6" scraper to remove the popcorn. If it does not come down easy you may need to spray a little more or allow it to soak in a little longer. Practice will teach you the right time and amount of spraying. Be careful to not dig into any drywall tape or mesh that was used to cover the seams. You may need to spackel any flaws in the ceiling before you paint or texture it. A little messy but not hard job.
