Splitting tomatoes

It's been a while since I grew tomatoes. But as I recall they are staying on the vine too long and possibly getting too much direct sun.

Inconsistent watering, especially if it has rained a lot lately. Tomatoes will take up the water when it is given and it causes it to have more moisture inside than the size of the tomato skin can handle and it splits. Thicker tomato skin varieties like roma and some beefsteak, etc. will not split as much. The smaller tomatoes, like sweet 100, grape, yellow pear will probably show it first, with the grape being last of the smaller ones, as the skin is a bit thicker. I hope this explains it ok for you. Not much you can do if it is raining a lot, otherwise try to water consistently so that it does not get sudden influxes of water after getting dry.

uneven watering -- get too dry, then a big drink of water causes the flesh to swell with 'water' faster than the skin can grow to accommodate it. Won't hurt the tomato for eating or cooking. Keep evenly moist -- but don't let them sit in water.

Usually it is from not picking them soon enough.

Water is why the tomatoes split. It usually has nothing to do with the taste though. I just cut them off and eat what's left. Love those tomatoes!
