My kitchen cabinets color have started to lose their colors. They were

Cherry Oak, now some of them are whitish. The are engineer wood and the house is only 3 years. My kitchen is very large and I have many. I would like to know the best and cheapest way to go, get real wood or restain them. They are 42” long and I have 32 including the ones under the California island. I want to sell and I need some opinions soon.
Thanks

  • If the house is only 3 years old, that is still considered a "manufacturing defect" but going after the builder is tough. I would hire an attorney. No matter what you decide to do, it is going to cost a boatload of cash to update, are you sure you want to do that? Can you post a photo? Maybe we can come up with an easy quick solution if we know what you have to work with.

If it's a "manufacturing defect", why not go directly to the manufacturer? Of course, the problem might end up that they will replace them but not install them. :( Have you talked to the builder or manufacturer at all? By engineered wood do you mean laminate or veneer? If it's veneer, you can stain it, but from what I'm reading, you can't stain laminate.

Before you go after the builder, I would contact them to correct the situation first. I would also contact the manufacturer for repairs at their expense for a 3 yo cabinet.

Have you researched the cabinet manufacturer and problems with those cabinets?

You sure these aren't thermafoil cabinets? I checked your term "engineered wood" which threw me off..... MDF, particle board or plywood. This article talks about problems which includes discoloration..... and also states most thermafoil cabinets come with a 5 yr warranty. http://fixmycabinet.com/2008/12/12/the-pros-cons-of-thermofoil-cabinet-doors/

It's hard to tell without a picture. Start by going to Homedepot or Lowe's paint department, and bring a picture so someone can help you with the right choice for the job.
