Like to make a book case head board for a queen size bed.

I wondered if I could use an old dresser or hutch..

    If the dresser or hutch has the width you need, you can use the frame for sure. Remove all the doors, drawers, and moveable shelves. Cut the whole remaining piece in half so you have a front and a back. Prepare the frame and other pieces by cleaning/stripping, sanding, staining or painting, and sealing. You can mount either piece. The back half will have natural places to put shelves. The front can have 1/2 size drawers and storage behind doors. If you need to add width, cut the back half in two and mount each half on the side of the front half, using all the hutch or dresser. Great idea! 😇💞
