cut off carrot tops and place in a shallow dish of water, they will grow green tops. Cut off top of pineapple and put in 6 inch pot with potting soil. Plant dried bean and watch them sprout. Plant herbs and watch them grow. Plant a tomato plant in a pot, watch it grow and eat the fruit.
1) Easiest thing to grow! Buy a bunch of celery and cut off at about a inch above the base. Feed the celery stalks to class and plant the root in a pot of potting soil. Water every couple of days, don't let the soil dry out. The celery will grow back and you can keep feeding it to the class.
2) Buy a bunch of green onions and cut off at bottom, use onion stalks in salsa , tomato mix, enjoy with nacho chips. Now plant bottom of onions in a planter with potting soil and watch them grow. Cut tops off onions and use them as they grow.
Vegetable and flower seeds are reduced to 7 cents a pack at Dollar General now in October. One bag of potting soil and any planting containers will allow you to let them get their hands dirty and smell the dirt. If you cut up an egg carton, you will have twelve planting cups. They only need about a pinch of seeds to plant, a tiny bit of water, and a window sill or table near the window to wait just a few days to see small seeds germinate. Very short lessons, 4 minutes at a time, will have more impact, and you let them discover when they can see green coming up. When all the cups are sprouting something, (have a few extra just in case), send the cups home in ziplock bags with the children. And even a pack of seeds if you want. Best wishes 😇💞
In my experience-3 preschool aged granddaughters and few of their friends neighboring me-they love flowers. Their eyes glaze over quickly when I offer them herbs to smell like mint, rosemary or lemon thyme that I use as groundcovers in my gardens. I would suggest either paper cups or tuna tins they can bring from home to decorate and some marigold seeds. They are fast growing, needing only 70f+ temps and a sunny window. Have fun!
Looks like you've discovered the "butterbean/wet paper towel/ziplock" activity. Beans, potatoes, and melons are good. Be careful with tomatoes as the plants themselves are toxic.
