  • Place a couple pounds of charcoal in a paper bag in your car. Next time you go to a car wash, spend a few dollars extra and have them steam clean it for you.

A steam vac with a hand attachment for upholstery would help. Baking soda may neutralize it until you can get it cleaned.

use a mixture of equal parts vinegar and water. Use a towel dipped in this solution and wring just so it's not too dripping. Scrub area well until clean, then air dry or use hair dryer on cold setting to dry. The smell of vinegar will go away when dry.

I don't know if this would work on carpeting, but a lemon rind turned inside out will remove stains and odors from a cutting board. Use warm water on a sponge on it, and then paper towels or such to absorb the water which will have the lemon juice on it. I would try it on a small area in a corner or such first to make sure the lemon did not leave a stain.

Second option - sprinkle a thin layer of borax on it - mist it very lightly, and let sit overnight. Vacuum it well.

Was it the whole gallon? Have the carpets professionally cleaned, by a detailer. Either that, or replace the carpet (but be sure to scrub the floor after the old carpet is out).

The tough part about getting milk odours out is due to the protein enzymes in milk. They have permeated down into the fibres and, with a volume of one gallon, likely down into the backing of the carpet also.

Any solutions that involve only putting odour maskers on top only, will not be sufficient or have lasting effectiveness.

Can you remove the carpet at all? This would make it easier to scrub and rinse well. Is it just the small carpet foot mats that have been effected, or it is the permanent carpet?
