OMG.... the deer are eating everything this year! HELP!!!

We always kept the deer out by typing strings at about a 5 nd a 2 foot height, along edges of places they needed to keep out of, just plain string. Then we'd tie strips of used cloth along the strings, about every yard or so. The strings were tied casually, with a it of a dip, from fence posts to trees, etc. The deer don't understand it, the rags move in the breeze and they especially hate something that looks like it will entangle them. The heights of the strings are easy to duck through and step over for people. We'd occas. change the strings around just to keep them freaked out. We'd lay large, crumpled pieces of chicken wire over areas that the strings didn't work - the deer don't like walking on it for the same reasons,just lift and "re-crumple" the pieces if they get too flat from human feet! Both of these methods worked for years on both the deer trying to travel through our yard and those that wanted our yard to be their salad bar. It freaks them out. White string and rags can be seen at night. Our neighbor reported seeing a large buck running toward the break in the hedge to our yard, and then stopping so suddenly upon seeing the strings, he fell on his rear and rolled over (the deer,not the neighbor) and ran back the other way, snorting and huffing!

M M the string (or wire) seems to be the easiest fence...and I've seen it recommended in several places.

In my yard, I have a simple wire mesh fence unrolled and standing upright (think: chicken wire roll on end) then unrolled to contain the small (yes, small) area I protect. If you really want to discourage them, make a NARROW plot with your protected plants within...they'll never figure out how to jump in without tripping themselves up.

There's just too small a space to land inside .. so they don't try!
