Even understory or ornamental trees can reach 40ft tall and equally wide.
Start with shrub or evergreen in mind... a solo hedge plant (boxwood, fire bush) can eventually fill the space... but would it look right?
Try a decorative plum tree. It has beautiful pink flowers in spring. It is a full tree.
