It really is dependent on your type of Hydrangea? Some flower off of old wood, others new wood. Some love to be cut back and produce larger blooms. If you like the shape now, just cut the dead flowers off, should be good to go next year!
I have a huge bush with big white clusters. I cut it down to 6" to 8" in the Fall. Today was beautiful out so I did it today. In the spring new wood comes in and by June it's huge again. I put about a cup of Epsom salt around the bush in June. Good luck
