What do I use to paint the hardware on my old bedroom set?

The furniture is dark maple and I will probably leave it that way but I thought changing the handles would give it new life.

I would say remove them, if possible and spray paint. If you can't remove them, open all the windows and cover anything close the them. Be careful with overspray.
Why not just buy new handles at the hardware store?
Look for a spray paint specific to the material they are made of. Wash well and dry. Spray the paint in short bursts while moving the can right to left. The object is to not cause drips or thick spots. Maybe practice on a scrap piece of wood first.
Take handles to Home Depot, Ace or Lowes and see if you can find something that isn't too expensive that you like.
