We kept burning our fingers as we took hot ,dishes out of the microwave . So I started making microwave pot holders. I gave about 20 away that year, to family and friends. the first picture is of my first microwave pot holders .They are so tired and nasty. I made new ones . So don't turn your nose up when you see the nasty things.
The picture you see is my microwave pot holders, I am showing you there is a front and back side to them. The rubber grip stuff you put on the pot holder on the side that will hold next to the hot dish, as you take it out of the microwave.
I got this new Kitchen dish towel for $1.00 at my thrift store. I also got a new hand towel for the bathroom . My first Microwave pot holders were made from bathroom hand towels I did not know which one I would end up using. so I got both towels. You will need a good quality hand or dish towel . Not the thin ones. I washed and dried the towel before I started the project.
Ok, I cut some of the dish towel off, You see 8 inches up and down. It is 33 inches along the bottom . I decided this was too long so I cut off the fabric at the coffee pot so it ended up being 30 inches long across the bottom of the pot holder and after you fold the fabric over you have 4 x 30 inch pot holder
Fold it in half like this, I turned it in side out and machine stitched around the open sides, leaving one side open to pull the fabric back to the right side At this time I added a little loop of fabric to that open end of the pot holder, so as I stitch it closed ,I have the end close, and a loop to hang my pot holder up.
I have some of that rubbery shelf liner stuff I cut a piece of that to fit the in side of my pot holder I also sew a little piece of seam binding or you could use ribbon or fabric to make a little hanging loop If you hang your pot holder up
I put a piece of wax paper on top of the shelf liner witch is on top of the pot holder . So if you thought of this like this. Fabric then shelf liner then wax paper. Machine stitch on top of the wax paper , Your machine will not move the shelf liner on the fabric ,with out the wax paper after stitch it just rip away the wax paper you no longer need it.
Can you see it better this way?
Well this is what you get .This pot holder is long enough to wrap enough of this dish so I can lift it out with out bunting my fingers.
I keep a little cutting board under my microwave. I use it to set the hot dishes from the microwave . after heating the food, I pick up the cutting board to take the food to the table. With no burns. One thing I want to tell you is when you are stitching down the rubber grip stuff or rubber shelf liner don't pull on it to much .As you stitch you will miss shape your pot holder Oh just rip away the wax paper after you have stitched the shelf liner stuff in place .It was just to use to get the machine to move over the rubber fabric. Some of you might try this with out the rubber grip stuff ,It may work ok ,but I did not want my hot food dish to slip as I took it out of the microwave. so this way, worked for me.

    Are these washable?

  • Can you wash and dry these with the rubber backing?

So the shelf liner will not melt with very hot Pyrex dishes? I love them but man do they get hot. Also, a side note, leaving those sides on and folding them so you have pockets to put your hands on each side would help with gripping too.

Making these holders with these materials is Sooo Dangerous! Not only will the rubber melt, the fabric can start a fire! I make microwave bowl cozies and they need to be made from 100% cotton fabric, batting and even the thread needs to be all cotton. Please be very careful!

My problem is the microwave is installed over my oven and level with my forehead. I spill and burn myself. I need a long pot holder I can put my hands into each end. Hey! Bet I can make that.
