If it really needs cleaning you want to get a water extraction cleaner like the ones made by Bissell. I found that it cost less than having a company come out one time to clean and I would have it for years to come. I love mine. My only advice is use less cleaning solution than you think you should. This beats the spray and vacuum cleaners like Resolve by a mile. You still use those but only on high traffic areas or spot cleaning before you drag the machinery out. You will wonder why you didn't get one before.
Rug Doctor rents machines and sells the cleaning products or you can buy your own carpet cleaner. Bissel makes them. I think Target or Walmart carries them.
There is also a dry cleaning method (or was a dry cleaning method when I had carpet) called Renuzit (I think). It claimed to not leave a white residue that attracted new dirt. I liked the way it clean but I don’t know if it’s still around. Hope that helps
