How to refurb a dresser for my kitchen for storage/workspace

First, you don't have to take your doors off to paint them, but I would take the drawers out. Just use an artist's brush around the inner hinges of the doors.

So, start with cleaning them really well. I recommend TSP (use gloves); rinse well.

Then electric sand them in the direction of the grain only. Clean that off.

Wipe it down with white rubbing alcohol.

Buy quality, soft, brushes that are made for acrylic paints.

I recommend PPG/Porter Paints Advantage 900 paint, in semi-gloss sheen. It is very, very durable and will stick to stain.

Paint thin coats on, and let each coat dry overnight.

Sand very lightly between each coat by hand with a soft, fine, sanding sponge.

In the end, once the color has built up sufficiently, you will not need to put a sealing poly coat on.

Paint takes 30 days to fully cure. *Don't set anything on your cabinet for about a week and a half. Make sure when you clean in the future, that you don't spray them with spray cleaners. Just gently clean with soap and water, and dry off.

**IF your weather is wet for very long, then you will need even longer before you use it. Good Luck!

I can't tell from your question whether you want to match your dresser to wainscoting or other kitchen cabinets. But, I had a sort of open closet opposite my laundry area that prior homeowners put lots of wire shelving in and I hated. I found a buffet/hutch in awful maple wood color and used chalk paint and I LOVE it now. The easiest painting I've ever done. No sanding! Surface must be very clean and I used Krid Kutter and wiped it down. No rinsing. Remove drawers and handles, knobs. Used Lowe's chalk paint with regular paint brush and let it dry over nite. Second coat with small foam roller. Let that dry overnite. Used very fine sandpaper around edges and then applied glaze with damp rag until I worked it down to look I wanted. Let it dry well and then gave it all a light coat of Varathane spray. The easiest painting because no sanding. The paint goes a long way and you can use it without glaze or with for look you want. It took 3 days which was mostly drying time and about $35.00 in paint and sandpaper.

Remove drawers, sand it down, paint it white or whatever, to match the wainscoting, then put pretty contact paper on the shelves. Then put little wheels on the drawers and slide them under your bed for extra storage!

Wainscoting is lovely, and so is the chest. They will tie in nicely together. I would probably just dry brush some white or color on in a satin finish, and leave it. I think less would be more, and look better to not be too matchy, matchy.

Personally, I like the wood color as is. Add the same counter top material you have in the rest of the kitchen. It will probably be wider, so just center it over the top of the dresser and attach from underneath. Or off set it and add shelves to the back side of the dresser, wheels to the bottom, and make it super useful to work around.

That is why I thought if you dry brushed some satin finish paint, you really wouldn't have to seal it, and def. not sand it! Your kitchen is very lovely.

I love the idea of chalk paint. I made this from a console tv someone gave me, some contact paper for the back wallpaper and a small dog bed. It already had casters so it’s supe handy to move!

I suggest using the feather duster technique with a contrasting paint color (dip feather duster in paint than dust your piece with it ) if you don't paint a base coat it will let the natural wood color show through a little. You could even use it on your cabinet doors also. Wouldn't take too long except for the prep work but a little prep work goes along way to make clean up a breeze i recommend frog tape if you need to take anything off for painting it removes easily.
